It has long been noted that, in addition to recounting the martyrdom and death of St Eusignius, The Passion of Eusignius includes a number of episodes from the legendary life of the first Christian emperor, which are also preserved in other works dedicated to him. So far, however, no special attention has been given to the place of this work within the broader context of Constantine’s vitae, which have been extensively discussed in scholarship – instead, it has been commented on mainly as a secondary source in which some parallels with better known hagiographic texts can be found. This article draws attention to its literary and historical value as a monument that has preserved a number of archaic features. Its appearance and dissemination provide insight into a different aspect of the reception of Constantine’s mythology, where the events of his life are recounted in the first person, by an eyewitness – a popular literary device used to lend credibility.
