Drawing on material from the Old Bulgarian translation of the Books of the Kingdoms the article focuses on the vocabulary describing human appearance and beauty. The study pays special attention to several lexical-semantic examples: the (co)relation between the adjectives добръ – красьнъ, красьнъ – чрьмьнъ, чрьмьнъ – русъ, чрьмьнъ – руменъ. The material from the Books of the Kingdoms, as presented in the Chronograph of the Archive, is compared to a wider range of Old Bulgarian texts such as other Old Testament books and chronicles, the Dioptra of Philip Monotropos, the Hexameron of John the Exarch, etc. Where appropriate, the study takes into consideration the Latin text of the Vulgate as well as the modern translations of the Old Testament in several European languages. Some specific translation choices and scribal errors in the Old Bulgarian text of Kingdoms are also discussed.
