The aim of the paper is to show, in an unconventional way, the place of Cyril and Methodius in the minds of the Bulgarians and their role in building the national identity – considering their figures in newspaper satires, humorous poems and caricatures published in the Bulgarian periodicals from the end of the 19th to the first half of the 20th century. It is emphasized that the images of the Slavic enlighteners in these works are a satirical metaphor for the social problems in our country during the period under review. Particular attention is paid to the topics of Bulgarian language and Bulgarian national consciousness in Macedonia, the spelling reforms carried out in the 1920s and 1930s, the political struggles and the mental mediocrity of the society.
